About Carolyn

Being a therapist is my calling in life! As a teenager, I babysat the neighborhood kids who were deemed "too difficult" by others due to behavior issues but I loved every minute of it. From these early experiences, I knew I wanted to study psychology in college. As an empathic mental health case manager taking it upon myself to raise awareness of the stigma of mental illness and advocate for equal rights for all, I was drawn to the social justice aspect of clinical social work to complete my master's degree. Today, I continue my passion for providing quality, compassionate counseling for individuals and families of all ages, races & ethnicities, genders & sexual orientations, religions & spiritual beliefs, and cultural backgrounds.

My Philosophy

As a therapist, I believe strongly in the concept of dialectics - two usually opposing ideas -  viewed as "and" rather than "or". So, I believe that you are doing the best you can with what you have AND you need to make the changes that you desire to improve your life. This perspective allows me to radically accept you for who you are while I support you in the change process, giving you the freedom to share openly without fear of blame or shame. Therapy itself is a partnership, where you are an expert in your own life and I walk beside you to bring my knowledge about diagnoses, treatment, and life after healing.  Let's work together so I can understand your struggles and you can be empowered to live your life differently.

I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology & Spanish from Illinois College in 2005 and my Masters in Social Work with a Concentration in Mental Health & Addictions from Indiana University in 2010. I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Association for Play Therapy, and the Indiana Association for Infant & Toddler Mental Health.

In my professional career, I have worked in residential treatment, family shelter, school-based, home-based, and office-based settings.  I have extensive experience working with a wide range of individuals, partners, families, and youth.
